PRL-174NT NECL/TLL Programmable VCO Clock Source (Discontinued)

Migration information:

  • The PRL-174ANT provides equivalent or superior functionality to the PRL-174NT except that it is guaranteed to run only up to 1.35 GHz.
  • The PRL-174ANT provides a 16-position "range" switch plus a 10-turn pot (vs. only a single-turn pot for the PRL-174NT), thus providing 160x the effective resolution of the older model. It is now possible to set frequencies much more accurately than before.
  • The PRL-174ANT also provides superior stability vs. the PRL-174NT.

Description

The PRL-174NT-1400 is a manually programmable clock source module. The internal VCO clock frequency f, variable from 700 MHz to 1.4 GHz, is divisible from 2 to 256, inclusive, using D1 through D8 of a 9-position DIP switch. D9 further divides the f/n outputs by 2, extending the maximum division to 512, and providing square wave outputs. A table showing all the possible division ratios is provided in the datasheet. The internal VCO frequency is continuously variable over one octave range using a front panel control. Standard maximum VCO frequency is 1.4 GHz. Other VCO frequencies are available on special order. 

The PRL-174NT-1400 has complementary NECL f/1 outputs and complementary NECL and TTL f/n outputs. The NECL outputs are designed for driving 50 Ω loads terminated into -2 V, and they can also drive AC coupled or floating 50 Ω loads. The 50 Ω back-terminated TTL outputs can drive long 50 Ω lines with or without 50 Ω terminations. PECL or LVPECL f/n outputs are available (instead of TTL) by special order.

Applications of the PRL-174NT-1400 include precision clocks for high speed digital systems, low jitter clock source for testing A/D's, SONET Clock generator, and Mini Modular Instrument for working with high speed NECL and TTL/CMOS circuits.

The PRL-174NT is housed in a 1.3 x 2.9 x 8-in. extruded aluminum enclosure and is supplied with a ±8.5 V, +17 V AC/DC Adapter.
